How does the free SSL (https) for my domain work?

You do not need to buy or upload an SSL certificate. When the TXT record that proves the domain is yours is found and your own domain's DNS points to your store, the server makes a free certificate for it by itself, usually within about 10 minutes. After that your shop opens with https on your domain.

Where to find it

Admin › Online store › Store design › Custom domain (অনলাইন স্টোর › স্টোর ডিজাইন › নিজের ডোমেইন). The page is called Your domain.

Only the store owner (Super Admin) sees it.

How it works

Your domain moves through these steps. You see each one as a coloured label next to the domain:

  1. Waiting for the TXT record. You added the domain, but the TXT record that proves it is yours is not found yet. No certificate is made before it is.
  2. Waiting for DNS. You added the domain, but it does not point to your store yet.
  3. DNS OK — making the certificate. The domain now points here. The server is making the certificate.
  4. Working (https). The certificate is made. Your shop opens on https://yourshop.com.
  5. Certificate failed. The certificate could not be made. The reason shows under the domain.

The panel checks your DNS by itself every 10 minutes. You can also press Check now to check at once. After the DNS is found, the certificate is made within about 10 minutes.

For example, Rangdhanu Fashion adds rangdhanufashion.com, sets the DNS records at its domain company and presses Check now an hour later. The label turns blue (making the certificate), and a few minutes later green: Working (https).

Good to know

  • Both addresses get one. The panel adds your domain with and without www. Each one gets its own certificate, so both need correct DNS records. One TXT record on the main domain covers both.
  • The certificate is free. It comes from Let's Encrypt and costs nothing.
  • Visitors are sent to https. Once a domain shows Working (https), anyone who opens it with plain http is moved to https.
  • Your free address keeps https too. Your yourname.ecommerceautopilot.com address works with https from the first day, whatever happens with your own domain.
  • DNS can be slow. A change at your domain company can take from a few minutes up to a few hours to reach everyone.

Common problems

  • It stays on "Waiting for DNS". The line under the domain says what it points to now. Fix the records at your domain company, then press Check now.
  • It says "Certificate failed". Usually the DNS does not point straight to the server, often because Cloudflare's orange cloud is on. Fix it, then press Check now. Without your press, the panel tries again by itself after 6 hours.
  • Only the www address works (or only the one without www). One of the two A records is missing or wrong. Check both. See How do I make www work on my own domain?
