Which Facebook permissions does the Inbox token need?

Tick the permissions the panel lists when you make the token: pages_show_list, pages_messaging, pages_manage_metadata, pages_read_engagement, instagram_basic, instagram_manage_messages, business_management. To bring post comments in as well, the token also needs pages_read_user_content and pages_manage_engagement.

Where to find it

The list is printed under Connect all my pages at once in Admin › CRM › Inbox › Inbox settings, card 3. Connected pages. You tick the permissions in your own Meta app (Graph API Explorer) when you make the token. Only the store owner (Super Admin) connects pages.

How it works

Each part of the Inbox uses its own permissions:

What you want Permissions it needs
List your pages (Connect all pages) pages_show_list, business_management
Messenger messages in and replies out pages_messaging, pages_manage_metadata
The page's name shown in the Inbox pages_read_engagement
Instagram direct messages instagram_basic, instagram_manage_messages
Comments on your posts pages_manage_metadata, pages_read_user_content, pages_manage_engagement

Example: "Rangdhanu Fashion" makes a token with only the first list. Messages arrive, but comments do not, and the panel says "Messages are on. Comments are not: the page token needs pages_manage_metadata, pages_read_user_content and pages_manage_engagement." The owner makes a new token with those added and connects again.

Good to know

  • The panel tells you what a token has. When Facebook refuses a page token, the error ends with "(this token has: …)" and the permissions in it, so you can see what is missing.
  • Missing comment permissions do not stop messages. The page is switched on for messages alone.
  • Missing pages_read_engagement does not stop the page. It connects by its ID, but its name is not read. See Why is my page called "Facebook page" in the Inbox?
  • Answers after 24 hours on Messenger can go with the Human Agent tag (up to 7 days) if you tick it in 2. Rules; your Meta app needs the Human Agent permission for that.
  • Some permissions need Meta's review before they work for people outside your app. That is done in your Meta app, not in the panel.
