How do I add several photos to a product?

Each product has one main photo (Product Image) and any number of extra photos (Gallery Images). Choose several gallery photos at once in the file window. On the edit page you can add more, replace the main photo, or remove a gallery photo with its red ×.

Where to find it

  • New product: Admin › Online store › Products › All products › Add Product
  • Existing product: All products, then the edit icon next to the product.

You need the Products & stock feature (Admin and Manager have it; the owner always does).

Step by step

  1. In Product Image, choose the main photo. The form recommends 800×800.
  2. In Gallery Images, choose the extra photos. Hold Ctrl (or tap several on a phone) to pick more than one.
  3. Press Save (or Update on the edit page).

To change photos later:

  1. Open the product with the edit icon.
  2. To replace the main photo, choose a new file in Product Image. The old main photo is removed when you press Update.
  3. To add gallery photos, choose them in Multi Image. They are added to the ones already there.
  4. To remove a gallery photo, press the red × on its small picture and confirm. It is removed straight away.
  5. Press Update if you changed anything else.

Good to know

  • Where photos show: on the product page the main photo comes first, then the gallery photos in the order you added them, then the photos of a variable product's sizes and colours. Shoppers can tap a photo to zoom.
  • The main photo works hardest. It is the photo on product cards, in lists and in the link preview when someone shares the product on Facebook or Messenger.
  • Light copies are made for you. When you upload a JPG or PNG photo (main, gallery or size/colour), a WebP copy is saved next to it and shown on the product page; the main photo also gets a smaller copy (up to 600 pixels) for product cards. A copy of a huge photo is still heavy, so keep photos light.
  • Photo files only. The main, gallery and size/colour photos must be JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF. Other files (SVG, PDF and the like) are refused.
  • Same shape, same size. Square photos of the same size keep category pages neat, especially on phones.
  • Size and colour photos are added per row in a variable product's table, not here.

Common problems

  • Save says the image field is required. A new product needs a Product Image. Choose one and press Save again.
  • "… must be a photo (JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF)." One of the files is another type. Save it as JPG or PNG and choose it again.
  • The main photo did not change. Make sure you chose the new file in Product Image (not Multi Image) before pressing Update.
