How do I add alt text to product photos?

Open the product, type a few words about the photo in the box under it, and press Update. That is the photo's alt text: Google and screen readers read it. If you leave the box empty, your shop uses the product name.

Where to find it

Admin › Online store › Products › All products, then the edit icon next to the product (or Add Product for a new one).

You need the Products & stock feature. The store owner always has it.

Step by step

  1. Open the product with the edit icon.
  2. Under Product Image, find the small box with the hint Photo alt text (ছবির বিকল্প লেখা). Type what the main photo shows, for example "Blue cotton panjabi with white embroidery, front".
  3. Under each gallery photo there is a small Alt text box. Type a short line for each photo, for example "Panjabi sleeve close-up".
  4. Press Update.

On Add Product there is only the box for the main photo. Save the product first, then open it again to add alt text to the gallery photos.

How it works

  • Empty box, product name. A photo without its own alt text gets the product name. A size or colour photo gets the product name plus its colour.
  • Up to 160 characters. Longer text is cut. Extra spaces and HTML tags are removed.
  • A reminder on the form. When the main photo has no alt text of its own, the product form shows a small warning above the SEO (Google) button. It never stops you from saving.
  • A light copy of every photo. When you upload a main, gallery, size or colour photo (JPG or PNG), a WebP copy is saved next to the original. Your shop shows the WebP copy to browsers that can read it and the original to the rest. The original is never changed.
  • The first photo loads first. The main photo on the product page loads straight away; the others load as the shopper scrolls.

Example: Rangdhanu Fashion writes "Red georgette three-piece, full view" for the main photo and "Three-piece dupatta border" for the second photo. On Google Images, each photo now has its own words.

Good to know

  • Describe the photo, not a list of keywords. One short, honest sentence works best.
  • Each photo its own line. Do not copy the same alt text to every gallery photo.
  • Copying a product? On the copy form the main photo's box starts empty and the gallery boxes are not shown. Save the copy, then open it to add alt text.
