How do I import products from a file?

Press Import on All products, download the example template, fill one row per product and upload the file. A row whose SKU (or link name) matches one of your products updates that product; any other row adds a new product.

Where to find it

Admin › Online store › Products › All products, then the Import button at the top right. The page is called "Import Products".

You need the Products & stock feature. The store owner always has it.

Step by step

  1. Go to Admin › Online store › Products › All products and press Import.
  2. Press Download Example Excel Template.
  3. Open it in Excel or Google Sheets. Keep the first (header) row exactly as it is.
  4. Fill one row per product. name is needed; fill sku too, so later imports find the product again.
  5. Save the file as .xlsx, .xls or .csv.
  6. Back on the Import page, choose the file in Excel/CSV File and press Import.
  7. When it works you see "Products imported successfully!".

How it works

  • Matching. Each row is checked against your own store's products only: first by sku; if the row has no SKU, by slug (the link name). A match is updated; no match means a new product. An empty slug is made from the name.
  • Numbers. Prices must be numbers; "1,200.50" is read as 1200.50. stock_quantity must be a whole number, 0 or more.
  • Yes/no columns (such as status, is_free_shipping, is_recommended) take 1 or 0, yes or no, true or false. Empty status means shown; empty is_stock means stock is managed.
  • category_id is a number, not a name. Export your products once to see the numbers your categories use.
  • type: use single or variable, the same words as the product form.

Good to know

  • Photos are not uploaded from the file. The image columns only hold a file name. Add photos on the product afterwards.
  • Test one row first. Import one product, open it in your shop and place a test order before you import the rest. Imported products do not go through the Add Product form, which sets up the price and stock line.
  • The package limit counts imported products. When you are already at your package's product limit, the import is refused with a message like "Your … package allows N products".
  • Change prices on the product form, not by import. The cart charges the price from the product's price line (or its sizes), and an import does not change that. Use import for texts, SEO fields and yes/no marks.

Common problems

  • The page lists errors. A row has no name, a price that is not a number, or a negative or broken stock number. Fix those cells and import again.
  • A row became a new product instead of updating one. Its SKU (or slug) did not match exactly. Copy the SKU from an export.
