Go to Products › Categories, type a Category Name and press Save. To make a sub-category, choose its main category in Parent Category first. Leave Parent Category empty for a main category.
Where to find it
Admin › Online store › Products › Categories. The page is called "Category Manage": the form to add a category is on top and the list of your categories is below.
You need the Products & stock feature. The store owner always has it.
Step by step
- Go to Admin › Online store › Products › Categories.
- Type the Category Name, for example "Panjabi".
- Add a Category Image if you like. Use a square picture; it is saved at 90 × 90 pixels.
- For a sub-category, choose its main category in Parent Category (for example "Eid Collection" under "Panjabi"). For a main category, leave it empty.
- If you want to help Google, write a few lines in Category page text (shown under the products) and fill SEO title and Meta description in the SEO (Google) section. A Google preview shows how the page can look.
- Press Save. The category appears in the list.
Then, on each product, choose the main category in Product Category and, if it has one, the sub-category in Sub Category.
How it works
- Two levels. Only main categories can be parents, so you get main categories and sub-categories under them.
- The link is made from the name. The Slug column shows it, and the category's shop page is /category/ plus the slug (for example /category/panjabi). If the same link is already used in your store, a number is added (for example "panjabi-1"). You can change it in Page address (slug) in the category's SEO (Google) section; the old link then sends shoppers to the new one (301).
- Your shop's category page at /category lists your categories for customers.
- Popular categories. Tick categories in the list and press Active Popular (or De-active Popular). Popular main categories, with their sub-categories, show in the shop's mobile category menu, and come first among the categories on a store theme's home page.
- Edit or delete with the icons in the Action column.
Example: Rangdhanu Fashion makes "Three-piece", "Panjabi" and "Saree", then "Eid Collection" and "Casual" under "Panjabi". Customers can open the whole Panjabi page or just the Eid ones.
Good to know
- Make categories before products, so you can pick them on the product form.
- Keep names short and clear. They show in menus and on small phone screens.
- Bangla names are fine. The link is still made in English letters, for example "পাঞ্জাবি" becomes "panjabi".
- To choose the home page category rows, use Admin › Online store › Store design › Home categories.
Common problems
- A category is missing from Parent Category. It is already a sub-category. Only main categories can have sub-categories.
- Sub Category is empty on the product form. The main category you chose has no sub-categories yet. Add one here first.
