What happens when I change a product's or category's address?

Nothing breaks. When you change the address of a product, a category or a brand, the shop remembers the old one and sends anyone who opens it to the new page with a permanent 301 redirect. Old Facebook posts, ads and Google results keep working.

Where to find it

You change the address in the item's own form:

  • Product: Admin › Online store › Products › All products, edit the product, open SEO (Google), box Page address (slug).
  • Category: Admin › Online store › Products › Categories, edit the category, box Page address (slug).
  • Brand: Admin › Online store › Products › Brands, edit the brand.

The redirects made this way are listed in Admin › Online store › Marketing & SEO › Redirects (needs the Website design tick).

How it works

Say Rangdhanu Fashion has a product at /products/cotton-kurti and you change its address to /products/cotton-kurti-summer.

  1. The shop saves cotton-kurti as an old address of that product.
  2. Someone opens /products/cotton-kurti from an old post. The shop answers 301 and opens /products/cotton-kurti-summer.
  3. Google sees the 301 and moves the old result to the new address over time.

The old address points at the product itself, not at a fixed text. If you change the address a second time, the first old address still lands on the newest one, in one hop.

In Redirects these lines show Auto · 301, with Hits and Last used so you can see whether people still come through the old address.

Good to know

  • Addresses use small English letters, numbers and dashes (for example royal-blue-sofa-cover).
  • Anything after ? in the visitor's link (like ad tags) is carried to the new address.
  • A deleted product or category loses its old addresses too: they show "not found" (404), like the current one.
  • Reusing an old address. If you give another product or category an address that used to be an old one, the old redirect is dropped and the new page opens there.
  • Automatic redirects cannot be edited in Redirects. To send an address somewhere else, change the item's address again, or add a manual redirect for a different address.
  • Only inside your shop. Your old addresses never redirect on another store's domain.

Common problems

  • The new address is refused as already taken. Another item in your shop uses it. Pick a different address.
  • The old link shows "not found". The product or category was deleted, not renamed. Add a manual redirect for that address in Redirects.
