What are backup codes and how do I use them?

Backup codes are 8 spare codes you get when you turn on two-step sign-in. Each one signs you in once, instead of the 6-digit code from your phone. Use them when your phone is lost, broken or simply not with you.

Where to find it

Admin › Administration › Security › Two-step sign-in (প্রশাসন › নিরাপত্তা › দুই-ধাপের লগইন). The page shows how many backup codes you have left, next to the date two-step sign-in was turned on.

How it works

  • The codes appear once, right after you turn on two-step sign-in, in a box titled "Your backup codes — save them now". They look like 4F7K-9Q2M.
  • They are kept hidden in the panel. Nobody, not even the owner, can see them again.
  • On the sign-in code page, type a backup code in the same box as the 6-digit code and press Sign in. Capital or small letters both work, and the dash is optional.
  • Each code works only once. After use it is gone, and the page shows one fewer left.
  • A backup code can also turn two-step sign-in off on the Two-step sign-in page, when it is not a must for your job.

Step by step: make new codes

  1. Open Two-step sign-in.
  2. Type the current code from your authenticator app in Code from the app.
  3. Press New backup codes (নতুন ব্যাকআপ কোড).
  4. Save the 8 new codes. Every old code stops working at once.

Good to know

  • Keep them away from your phone. Write them on paper or keep a photo somewhere other than the phone that has the app.
  • Running low? Make new codes before you use the last one.
  • New codes need the app. You cannot make new backup codes with a backup code. If your phone is gone, sign in with a backup code, then ask the store owner to turn two-step off for you, or turn it off yourself (when allowed) and set it up again.
  • Making new backup codes also ends every "trusted" device, so each one asks for a code once more.

Common problems

  • "That code is not right." The backup code was already used, or a letter was mistyped. Try another one.
  • No codes left and no phone. A staff member asks the store owner to turn two-step sign-in off for them. The owner should keep their own backup codes extra safe: the Turn off (lost phone) button works on other people, never on yourself.
