Customers who forget their password, or just do not want to type it, press Sign in with an SMS code on your shop's sign-in page. They type their mobile number, get a 6-digit code by SMS, type it and press Sign in.
Where to find it
On your shop, not in the admin panel: the sign-in page (yourshop.com/login) shows the Sign in with an SMS code button, which opens yourshop.com/sign-in-with-code.
The button appears only when your shop can send SMS: Admin › Administration › Settings › SMS must be on and complete. Only the store owner opens that page.
Step by step
What the customer does:
- On the sign-in page, presses Sign in with an SMS code.
- Types their Mobile number and presses Send code.
- On Enter your code, types the 6 digits from the SMS.
- Presses Sign in. They see "Welcome back!".
Use a different number goes back to step 2. Sign in with your password goes back to the normal sign-in.
How it works
- The SMS comes from your own SMS account: "Your shop name code: 123456. Valid 5 minutes. Don't share it."
- Code rules: valid 5 minutes, dead after 5 wrong tries, a new code at most every 60 seconds.
- The same answer for every number. The page says "If 01XXXXXXXXX has an account here, we have sent it a 6-digit code." A number without a customer account gets no SMS, so nobody can find out who has an account.
- It verifies the phone. Signing in with a code proves the number, so the account then shows all past orders with it in your shop.
Customers from other shops. A customer who has an account on another shop on eCommerce Autopilot can sign in to yours with a code. Their account is linked to your shop, just as with a password, and appears in your customer list.
Never a team account. The owner or staff of any store, yours or another, cannot sign in this way. They use the staff sign-in.
Example: a Rangdhanu Fashion customer forgot her password. She taps Sign in with an SMS code, types 01XXXXXXXXX and the code, and is signed in.
Common problems
- The button is missing. Your SMS account is off or a box is empty. Fix it in Settings › SMS.
- "That code is not right. 2 tries left." A digit is wrong. Check the latest SMS.
- "A code was sent a moment ago." Wait for the countdown, then press Send a new code.
- No SMS arrives. The number may have no customer account (or be a staff login), so no code is sent. Otherwise see "Customers are not getting SMS codes".
