Your shop already has both. Open https://yourshop.com/sitemap.xml and https://yourshop.com/robots.txt (with your own shop's address). They are built by themselves from your shop's own pages, so there is nothing to upload. Submit /sitemap.xml in Google Search Console so Google finds every page.
Where to find it
- In the browser: your shop's address followed by
/sitemap.xmlor/robots.txt. - In the panel: Admin › Online store › Marketing & SEO › SEO settings has Sitemap and robots.txt links next to the Save button (needs the Website design tick; the Admin role has it, and the owner always does).
How it works
sitemap.xml is a list of lists. It points to smaller files, each for one kind of page:
| File | What is in it |
|---|---|
sitemap-pages.xml |
Home, all categories, contact, and the pages you have written (about us, policies, your own pages); the blog and brands pages when you have them |
sitemap-categories.xml |
Every category that has an address |
sitemap-products-1.xml, -2 … |
Products shown in the shop, with their main photo, up to 5,000 per file |
sitemap-blog.xml |
Published blog posts |
sitemap-brands.xml |
Brand pages, when the shop has brands |
Hidden products and products set to Hide from Google in their SEO (Google) section are left out.
robots.txt tells search engines what to skip: the admin panel, cart, checkout, sign-in, customer account, wishlist, order tracking and search results. Everything else is open. Its last line gives the address of your sitemap.
Step by step: submit the sitemap to Google
- Verify your shop in Google Search Console first.
- In Search Console, open Sitemaps.
- Type
sitemap.xmland press Submit.
Good to know
- Always up to date. Saving or deleting a product, category, blog post, page or brand makes the sitemap fresh on its next visit.
- Your own domain. All addresses in both files use the address the shop is opened on. After moving to your own domain, submit the sitemap on the new address.
- Each shop has its own. Your sitemap only lists your pages, never another store's.
- Hidden shop. When Hide the whole store from Google is on, robots.txt says
Disallow: /and the sitemap is empty.
Common problems
- Search Console says "Couldn't fetch". Open the sitemap in your browser. If it opens, wait and try again; Google often retries by itself.
- A product is missing from the sitemap. Check it is shown in the shop and not set to Hide from Google.
