How to Choose an eCommerce Platform in Bangladesh: A 12-Point Checklist

Most sellers in Bangladesh do not start with a website. They start with a Facebook page, a phone and a notebook. Then the orders grow, the notebook fills up, a parcel goes to the wrong address, and someone says, "You need a proper website." That is the moment you have to pick an ecommerce platform — and it is easy to pick the wrong one, because most platform comparisons online are written for sellers in other countries who are paid by card, not by cash at the door.

This guide is for the Bangladeshi seller. It explains what an ecommerce platform actually has to do for a cash-on-delivery business, gives you a 12-point checklist you can use on any platform, and shows you with taka examples how to work out what a platform really costs you each month — not just its price tag.

What an ecommerce platform has to do in Bangladesh

An ecommerce platform is the software that runs your online shop: the product pages and checkout your customers see, and the admin panel where you and your team take orders, pack and send them, and count the money.

In many countries, that is mostly a checkout story: the customer pays by card, the money arrives, you ship. In Bangladesh the hard part comes after the order:

  • Most customers pay cash on delivery, so an order is only a promise until the courier collects the money.
  • Every order has to be booked with a courier — Steadfast, Pathao, RedX or another — and tracked until it is delivered or comes back.
  • Some customers order and then refuse the parcel, and every return costs you a delivery charge both ways.
  • Many orders come from Facebook and Messenger, not from the website.
  • The money arrives in pieces: courier payouts, bKash, Nagad, cash in the office.

So a good platform for a Bangladeshi shop is not just a pretty storefront. It is the thing that carries an order from the first message to the money in your account. Keep that picture in mind for the whole checklist.

Your four options

Before the checklist, be clear about the kind of tool you are choosing. Sellers usually end up with one of these four.

Option What it is Good for Watch out for
Facebook page only Orders by Messenger and comments, written in a notebook or sheet Testing a product, the first months Orders get lost, no own address on Google, hard to grow a team
Marketplace You list on a big marketplace's site Reaching their buyers Their rules and commission, the customer belongs to them, little brand of your own
Custom-built website A developer builds a site for you Very special needs High first cost, you pay for every change, it depends on one person
SaaS ecommerce platform You rent a ready shop and admin panel for a monthly fee Most growing shops Check it fits local COD, couriers and payments (the checklist below)

Many sellers use more than one: a Facebook page for reach, plus their own shop on a platform that also handles the Facebook orders. The rest of this guide is about choosing that platform.

How to choose an ecommerce platform: the 12-point checklist

Go through these twelve points with every platform you are considering. Write yes, partly or no next to each. A "no" on the first six is usually a deal-breaker for a COD business.

The 12-point platform checklist Score every platform: yes, partly or no 1 · Sell ✓ COD checkout ✓ Facebook & Messenger orders ✓ Fast on phones 2 · Deliver ✓ Courier booking ✓ Fraud & return check ✓ Stock updates by itself 3 · Get paid ✓ bKash, Nagad, own gateway ✓ Payouts in a cashbook ✓ Profit you see 4 · Run ✓ Staff roles ✓ Own domain & data export ✓ Real monthly cost A "no" in Sell or Deliver is usually a deal-breaker for a COD shop
Group the twelve points into four jobs: sell, deliver, get paid and run the team.

Sell

1. Cash on delivery comes first. The checkout must take a COD order in a few taps: name, phone, address, area. Ask: can I set different delivery charges for inside and outside Dhaka? Can I ask for an advance on risky orders? Can I add online payment later without changing the checkout?

2. Facebook and Messenger orders land in the same place. If half your orders come from chats, they must end up in the same order list as website orders, with the same status, courier booking and reports. Otherwise you are running two shops. Ask whether chats and comments can be answered from the panel and turned into an order.

3. It is fast and clear on a phone. Your customers are on mobile data. Open the demo shop on a mid-range phone and try to order. If the product page is slow or the checkout needs zooming, you will lose orders you never see.

Deliver

4. Courier booking without copy-paste. Typing every address into the courier's panel takes minutes per order and causes mistakes. Check which couriers have a live connection (you book from your panel and the status comes back by itself) and which only work by file. Write down the couriers you actually use today.

5. A fraud and return check before you send. A platform that shows a customer's history — how many parcels they received and how many they refused — lets you call or ask for an advance before you waste a delivery charge. This one point can pay for the platform. Our guide on how to reduce courier returns explains the habits that go with it.

6. Stock that updates by itself. When an order is placed, cancelled or returned, the stock should move without you touching it. Ask what happens when two staff change the same product at once.

Get paid

7. Local payments with your own merchant account. Check that you can switch on bKash, Nagad or a gateway like SSLCommerz with your own account, so the money goes to you directly. Ask how a "send money" payment with a transaction ID is checked.

8. Courier payouts and a simple cashbook. In a COD business, the courier holds your money until they pay out. A good platform shows what was collected, what charges were cut and what was paid to you — and ideally puts that payout into your cashbook so your balance is right without manual entry.

9. Profit you can see. Sales are not profit. You need to see sales minus product cost, courier charges, returns and ads. If you are not sure how to work that out, start with how to calculate profit margin and then check whether the platform shows those numbers for you.

Run

10. Staff roles that protect your money. Once you hire a moderator, a packer or a manager, each should see only what they need. Ask whether a staff member can take orders without seeing your profit, cash balances or keys.

11. Your own domain and your data. You should be able to use your own domain (yourshop.com.bd) with a free SSL certificate, and export your products, orders and customers any time. If you ever leave, your customer list leaves with you.

12. The real monthly cost. Not just the price, but what the platform saves or costs you in time, returns and mistakes. The next section shows how to work that out.

Worked example: what a platform really costs

Here is an example with made-up but realistic numbers for "Rangdhanu Fashion", a shop with 25 orders a day (about 750 a month). Replace the numbers with your own.

Time spent on orders. Without courier booking from the panel, a staff member copies each order into the courier's site. Say that takes 3 minutes an order:

  • 750 orders × 3 minutes = 2,250 minutes = 37.5 hours a month.
  • If that staff member earns ৳15,000 for about 200 working hours a month, one hour costs ৳75.
  • 37.5 hours × ৳75 = about ৳2,800 a month just on copy-paste.

Returns. Say 18 of every 100 parcels come back today, and each return costs you about ৳130 in delivery and return charges (check your own courier's rates). If a fraud check and a call before sending bring that down to 14 of every 100:

  • Before: 750 × 18% = 135 returns × ৳130 = ৳17,550.
  • After: 750 × 14% = 105 returns × ৳130 = ৳13,650.
  • Saving: about ৳3,900 a month — and that is before counting the products that come back damaged.

Mistakes. A wrong address, a parcel sent twice, a payout never checked. Even two mistakes a month at ৳500 each is ৳1,000.

So in this example, a platform that books couriers, checks fraud and keeps the payouts straight is worth roughly ৳7,700 a month to this shop before you even count new sales. A "cheaper" option that does none of this is not cheaper. These are estimates for one example shop; your numbers will be different, which is exactly why you should do this sum yourself.

Cost line Your monthly number
Platform fee ৳
Staff hours spent on orders × cost per hour ৳
Returns × cost per return ৳
Mistakes and lost orders (estimate) ৳
Total real cost ৳

How to test a platform in one week

Most SaaS platforms give you a free trial. Do not spend it just changing colours. Use it to run a real week of your business.

  1. Day 1 – Set up the basics. Add 10 of your real products with photos and prices, your delivery charges and your shop name.
  2. Day 2 – Connect your courier. Put in your own courier keys and book one test parcel. Check that the status comes back by itself.
  3. Day 3 – Take real orders. Share the shop link on your page. Place one order yourself from a phone, as a customer would.
  4. Day 4 – Bring in your chats. If the platform has an inbox, connect your Facebook page and turn one chat into an order.
  5. Day 5 – Add a staff member. Give a moderator a login and check what they can and cannot see.
  6. Day 6 – Check the money. Look at the orders, courier charges and what the reports say you earned.
  7. Day 7 – Score it. Fill in the 12-point checklist and the cost table above. Decide with numbers, not with the demo video.

Questions to ask before you pay

Send these to any platform's support before you commit. How fast and how clearly they answer tells you a lot.

  • Which couriers have a live connection, and which only work by file?
  • Does the money from online payments go straight to my own merchant account?
  • What happens to my shop if I do not pay one month? Can I still export my data?
  • Can I use my own domain, and is SSL included?
  • Can a staff member work without seeing profit, salaries or cash?
  • What exactly is limited on the free or cheapest package (products, staff, orders)?
  • Is the admin panel available in Bangla, and is support in Bangla?

Common mistakes when choosing a platform

  • Choosing by the theme. A beautiful storefront with no courier booking costs more than a plain one that saves hours every day.
  • Comparing only the monthly fee. As the example showed, time and returns usually cost far more than the fee.
  • Paying for a custom website too early. Unless your needs are very special, a custom build means paying for every change and depending on one developer.
  • Keeping Facebook orders outside the system. If chat orders stay in a notebook, your stock, reports and profit are always wrong.
  • Giving everyone the owner's login. Pick a platform with proper roles from day one; it is much harder to fix later.
  • Not checking data export. Your customer list is one of the most valuable things your business owns.

Quick checklist

Print this or copy it into your notes, and score each platform you try:

  • COD checkout in a few taps, with inside / outside Dhaka charges
  • Facebook and Messenger orders in the same order list
  • Fast and clear on a mid-range phone
  • Live courier booking with the couriers I use
  • Customer fraud / return history before sending
  • Stock moves by itself on orders, cancels and returns
  • bKash / Nagad / gateway with my own merchant account
  • Courier payouts and a cashbook
  • Profit after courier, returns and costs
  • Staff roles that hide money and keys
  • Own domain with SSL, and full data export
  • Real monthly cost worked out with my own numbers

Conclusion: the one thing to do today

Choosing an ecommerce platform is not about the nicest theme or the lowest price. It is about which tool carries your orders from the first message to the money in your account with the fewest hands touching them.

So today, do one thing: write down how many orders you take a month, how many minutes each one takes you and how many come back. With those three numbers you can fill in the cost table above and compare any platform honestly.
